My Art

My father, Spiros Piliounis, was an accomplished visual artist in Greece, and he taught me the principles of balance, color, form, harmony, perspective and proportion as early as age six.  Acrylics, watercolor and oils were the media I experimented with during my early years, and I still, occasionally, go back to them.  However, the medium that has fascinated me most is glass, so I now specialize in mosaics.  The colors available in Venetian glass tesserae are breath taking, and the joy of creating a whole out of fragments parallels only that of a psychologist helping someone broken to heal and be one entity again.  The self, the group, the nation and the world are in pieces.  Wholeness has been compromised because we have scattered ourselves geographically, politically, culturally, socially and morally to the point that recovering the fragments has become taxing or even impossible.  Mosaics are my own way of creating images or illusions of wholeness.  The visual arts allow artists to uncover beauty and/or truth or both and give the viewer or spectator the chance to pursue either one or both through color, texture, shape, form or perspective. My glass tesserae bear names like, forest, flame, ocean, opulence, silver lining, storm and scarlet and sunshine and sunset.  How can such names not conjure up images of wholeness?
